Your Dollars At Work
Every year the YMCA of Philadelphia & Vicinity is able to provide more than $1.5 million to serve children and families in need of financial assistance. Last year, the Roxborough YMCA distributed $105,677.83 in financial assistance to over 200 needy families by:
- Enabling 90 children and youth an opportunity to participate in summer day camp and after school programs.
- Educating 45 young children ages 0-5 to participate in our licensed childcare programs.
- Keeping over 100 children active and engaged in youth sports, aquatics, and the Health Intervention Program, Body-Rox.
Joanne is a grandmother who, due to circumstances beyond her control, has been left to raise three grandchildren. At a time when many women her age are learning to enjoy their "empty nest" she instead is faced daily with the responsibility of caring for these wonderful children. Three years ago she expressed her concerns over how to care for the children over the summer. She works in a doctor's office and barely makes enough money to provide for her family's day to day needs let alone pay for summer camp. Fortunately, the doctor she works for happens to be a board member at the Roxborough YMCA. He told Joanne about the Strong Kids program and let her know that the Y offers financial assistance to families such as hers. For the past three summers Joanne's grandchildren have enjoyed a safe, fun learning experience in our day camp, giving her the piece of mind to go to work every day knowing that they will be cared for. With the help of the YMCA's Strong Kids funds she also is able to afford camp without worrying about whether she will have to chose between camp and other necessities such as utility bills and clothes for the children.
