The Willow Grove YMCA Hurricanes Swim Team entered their post season with the force of a hurricane. This small but mighty team of 100 swimmers, ranging in age from 6 to 18, had 61 athletes qualify for the 2023 Charley Hartley Memorial Silver Championship (CHMSC) Meet and 41 qualify for the PA YMCA East District Championship Meet!
At the District Championships, our athletes achieved many personal best times:
- Four new team records were set by Megan Luddecke in the 13 - 14 Girls 100 Freestyle, 13 - 14 Girls 100 Backstroke, 13 - 14 Girls 200 Freestyle, and the 13 - 14 Girls 400 IM
- New team records were also set by Quinn Jerardi in the 13 - 14 Girls 200 Butterfly
- Gabi Zanfir set a team record in the 11 - 12 Boys 100 Butterfly
Eleven of the District Championship swimmers also qualified to advance to the 2023 PA YMCA State Championship that was held on March 24-26, 2023 at the Mylan Park Aquatic Center in Morgantown, West Virginia. Chris Carroll, Megan Luddecke, Quinn Jerardi, Rusty Sanders, Keira Collopy, JD Maxwell, George Mishchenko, Alex Smerechansky all participated at the 2023 PA YMCA State Championship. During this meet, we had even more swimmers achieve personal best times.
At our State Championship, we had four swimmers place within the Top 8 and receive medals:
- Megan Luddecke placed 6th in the 13 - 14 Girls 200 IM
- Quinn Jerardi placed 6th in the 13 - 14 Girls 100 Butterfly
- Rusty Sanders placed 8th in the 9 - 10 Boys 100 Butterfly
- Gabi Zanfir placed 5th in the 11 - 12 Boys 100 Breaststroke and 100 IM, 4th in the 11 - 12 Boys 100 Butterfly, 2nd in the 11 - 12 Boys 200 IM and 3rd in the 11 - 12 Boys 50 Butterfly.
New team records were achieved at the State Championship, including:
- Quinn Jerardi set new team records in the 13 - 14 Girls 100 Butterfly and 200 Butterfly
- Gabi Zanfir set new team records in the 11 - 12 Boys 100 Butterfly, 200 Freestyle and 200IM
