Sports Programming Frequently Asked Questions

Find answers to your questions about our sports programs.

What is the difference between sports classes and sports leagues?

Sports classes are more instructional in nature and meant to introduce kids to a certain sport and/or grow their skills. Instructional classes run during our program sessions which are 7 weeks in length (8 weeks in the summer), with 6 sessions throughout the year. Those sessions are Winter, Early Spring, Late Spring, Summer, Early Fall, & Late Fall. Registration opens 3 weeks prior to the start of each session. There are 4 league sessions throughout the year and each league is 8 weeks in length. Leagues consist of both practices & games, and practices may take place on a separate day depending on the age group. Participants in leagues are placed on teams and also receive YMCA jerseys.

Do sports leagues have coaches?

Yes, all leagues require coaches, and depending on the branch may be a combination of YMCA staff as well as parent volunteer coaches.

What should my child wear in sports classes?

Children should wear comfortable and class appropriate athletic clothing and footwear. Sneakers are required for all classes in the gym. Cleats are not permitted to be worn indoors.

What equipment is required in sports classes or sport leagues?

The YMCA will provide all necessary equipment for classes & leagues. There is no need to bring your own.

What should my child bring to sports classes or sports leagues?

Children should wear comfortable & athletic clothing and footwear. Sneakers are required for all classes in the gym. In addition, please bring a water bottle for water breaks.

Can a sibling participate in class even if they aren’t registered?

No, siblings cannot participate in a class they aren’t registered for. We kindly ask that siblings cheer from the sidelines and be respectful of the class to help keep everyone safe & learning. KidZone is available at certain branches during designated times for even more fun!

My child is signed up for a sports league, when do they practice?

Practice days & times will vary by branch, sport, and team. Specific information will be provided by the Sport and Camp Director prior to the start of the season and many leagues will utilize the TeamSnap One app. All information will be provided prior to the start of the season.

Are there days that sport classes don’t run?

No programming will be held on the following holidays: New Years Day, Easter Sunday, Memorial Day, Fourth of July, Halloween (only classes after 4 PM), and Thanksgiving. Any classes that would fall on one of these holidays are already prorated at the time of payment.
