Assisting women, healing lives.

The YMCA Women’s Opportunity Center is committed to helping women gain economic self-sufficiency through education, job readiness, networking, outreach, referrals, and emotional support.  The Center also promotes awareness of women’s rights and issues through public advocacy.  We provide free support that includes education and career development–a powerful combination–giving women opportunities that can lead to meaningful employment.

YMCA Membership is not required to participate in our services and our workshops are open to everyone for a small fee.

Who are displaced homemakers?

We are committed to helping displaced homemakers gain economic self-sufficiency through education, job readiness, networking, outreach, referrals, and emotional support. But who are displaced homemakers?

Most Displaced Homemakers are women who have been working at home caring for family members and relying on others for financial support.  A woman becomes “displaced” when she loses financial support through death, separation, divorce, or disability of a spouse.  Most are not eligible for public assistance, worker’s compensation, or unemployment benefits. In 1979 the New Jersey Displaced Homemakers Act was signed into law to establish displaced homemakers centers.

There are over an estimated half a million displaced homemakers between the ages of 30 and 66 in New Jersey alone.

How do we help?

At the Center, we provide free support that includes education and career development–a powerful combination–giving women opportunities that can lead to meaningful employment.  Our Center teams also work to promote awareness of women’s rights and issues through public advocacy.

Our staff are working remotely due to COVID-19 - but we are still here to help!  We are available via email or phone if you are in need of services.  Please don't hesitate to reach out.  We are also holding our workshops via ZOOM. If you would like to attend please contact us or give us a call at 856-231-9622 extension 3918 to leave a message.
