Joe Brown walked past the Fitness Center every day for two years. As an army veteran, he'd come to the Y religiously but stuck to what brought him through the door — the ping pong table.
Then one day, Joe noticed staff setting up for a veterans meeting. His curiosity lead him to talk with the staff and let them know he is veteran, and they excitedly asked him to join in.
That simple invitation changed everything for Joe, and suddenly he was part of the Y's Veterans Wellness Program. This program is designed to help veterans develop healthy habits, try new forms of exercise, and connect with each other.
Before long, Joe discovered a whole new world beyond the ping pong table. "I walk by the weight room all the time. I never thought about going in. Now I do. That's like another world for me."
But the transformation goes deeper than physical fitness. Joe has witnessed remarkable changes in his fellow veterans, like the gentleman who arrived on a cane and, weeks later, no longer needs it. "To see that improvement in somebody is really good."
What stands out most for Joe is the camaraderie. "In the military, team is everything. You're not an individual, you're part of a team. And that's what you're seeing in here. People trying to work together."
Joe is well on the way to his goal of losing 10 pounds, and back in the weight room for the first time in 40 years. More importantly, he's found what makes the Y special: "It's good to see people trying to overcome their inhibitions and working together."
